Revox B215

built from 1985 to 1990
The Revox B215 cassette deck was the successor to the legendary Revox B710 and, like that device, was way ahead of its time. This was despite Revox being very late in bringing a cassette recorder to market. Perhaps that was one of the reasons why. This allowed Revox to utilize all the technological possibilities available up to that point. For a long time, it was considered one of the absolute benchmarks in the cassette recorder field and remains absolutely top-notch today. The qualities of this device were achieved through numerous technical refinements and innovations, but also through long experience with tape machines. Revox knew the importance of stable and precise tape guidance!
The Revox B215 had what was then known as a "The big hit:" described as ultra-modern "Revox calibration computer" with an integrated tone generator with three frequencies: 400 Hz for the level, 4 kHz for the equalization (EQ), and 17 kHz for the bias or pre-magnetization, which occurs at 105 kHz. Both channels are measured and adjusted separately. Within 20 seconds, the settings for recording volume, equalization, and pre-magnetization are determined using six different measurements, and the data is stored in one of the six memory locations. In addition to manual control, fully automatic control and recording were also possible using peak level measurement and holding. This concept stands for sound quality that is unsurpassed at Revox.
Why is the drive so stable?! A solid die-cast chassis consisting of three parts ensures its enormous stability. The stability, precision, and exact tape guidance are particularly important for the narrow magnetic tapes used in music cassettes, which are only 4 mm wide for 4-track recordings and have a maximum thickness of 18 µm. And all this at a speed of just 4.76 cm/sec.
Even the support plate for the functional units is made of solid 1.2 mm thick sheet steel! Fully assembled, the unit weighs approximately 2.5 kg. No other cassette drive is or has been more stable and durable! This is engineering at its finest. This is where the late start with tape decks and the many years of experience with reel-to-reel tape recorders pay off. You have to keep something like this alive.
Recording quality depends largely on the level control. The Revox B215 features a precise level meter that allows for extremely precise level adjustment! The scaling and resolution exactly match the display of its predecessor, the Revox B710 MKII. On the Revox B710, the evaluation is performed via 24 op-amps configured as comparators. On the Revox B215, both evaluation and display are handled by one of the three processors. In terms of visibility, the Revox B710, with its LED display, has a clear advantage.
We also know of many LCD displays, not just on the B215, that have leaked and turned black from the edges.
The digital counter displays the elapsed playing time in minutes and seconds. Even if a new cassette is inserted and not rewound to the beginning, the processor's counter calculates the time already played after a short period of playback.
Two additional locator positions can be accessed from any operating mode. Loop operation is also possible.
In the audio electronics, too, every option has been utilized to achieve the perfect sound! To enable fully automatic, processor-assisted calibration for various tape types, the Revox B215 requires precise basic settings and parameterization. Only when these settings are correct can precise calibration with 256 steps be performed.
There is so much space on the board - why are the 2 op amps placed so tightly and closely spaced?

Accesories

for Revox B215 tape decks

cassette cover

The new cover has a frosted glass finish. The differences from the original are minimal; everything fits perfectly, and nothing wobbles.
We do everything we can to preserve these wonderful Revox devices; original covers simply don't exist anymore!

Wired remote control

Kabelfernbedienung für Revox 710, B710 MKII, Premium-Hifi
Yes, there was indeed a wired remote control for the Revox B215 cassette decks! This was despite the fact that the devices were equipped with a serial link and an infrared receiver as standard.
We have the remote control in the house - unfortunately it doesn't work :-(
Still extremely rare!

Cleaning kit

Most recording or playback problems are caused by dirty tape heads and tape guides.Wow and flutter and poor winding are also part of the error pattern.
Yes, proper cleaning is very important here too. This is the only way to achieve the best recording quality!

Sintered bearing oil

Original Klüber Sinterlageröl PDP 65 für diverse Studer- und Revox-Geräte, Premium-Hifi

The first Revox B215s are now 40 years old! Dry sintered bearings irreparably damage the sound motors and the chassis that house the bearings. We advise all owners to oil the bearings with appropriate sintered bearing oil.
Once the bearings have run dry, it is too late for repair!

Processors

We supply the important processors for the Revox B215, Revox B710 and so on.
But be careful! We cannot always guarantee the availability of these and other components. Many of these OTP (one-time programmable) ICs have been factory-programmed and are simply no longer available. Many other ICs are also difficult to obtain.
